Chicken is the most common type of poultry and can be prepared in thousands of ways. Here a few different types of chicken that you may really enjoy.

Nashville Hot Chicken

Nashville hot chicken is one of the most popular chicken dishes out there. It originated as a local specialty of Nashville, Tennessee. It is simply a portion of fried chicken that has been marinated in buttermilk and hot sauce with a blend of seasonings finished off with a spicy coating made with cayenne and black pepper. Nashville style hot chicken started as a local dish and spread across different states. It is different from other chicken dishes because of its spiciness and the different degree of hotness that are available. At Crimson Coward we have five heat levels!

If you aren’t in the area or feel like getting creative in the kitchen you can make your own Nashville style hot chicken at home. You can use your favorite cut of chicken, either the breast, thigh or drumstick. Rub the chicken with kosher salt and black pepper and marinate it in buttermilk and hot sauce. The buttermilk helps make the chicken tender so don’t skip the marinating time. Shake off any excess buttermilk, coat the chicken in flour and hot chicken spices. The next step is to fry the chicken to crispy and juicy perfection. Be sure your oil is hot enough, it can be very helpful to use a food thermometer. The chicken will not fry correctly if your oil temperature isn’t correct.  Once your chicken is fried to your liking then it’s time for the last step. This is what makes Nashville hot chicken different! The last step is coating it with the hot sauce that will give it a unique flavor. Cayenne and black pepper are the two major ingredients in the sauce that determines the level of hotness. Nashville hot chicken is traditionally served with sliced white bread and pickles. How hot do you dare to go? It can be really fun to try out different heat levels and spice combinations.

Buffalo Wings

Another hugely popular chicken dish is of course Buffalo wings! They are served up hot with  celery and carrot sticks and blue cheese dressing for dipping. Buffalo wings were invented at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York in 1964 and are traditionally deep-fried in oil. Buffalo wings are different from Nashville hot chicken because they are not breaded. The chicken wing used for Buffalo wings is usually divided into three parts the drumette, flat, and flapper.  Some people prefer to bake or even grill their wings for a healthier alternative. The fried chicken wings get tossed in a sauce consisting of vinegar-based cayenne pepper hot sauce, butter, garlic and salt.

Butter Chicken

Butter chicken originated from India and features marinated chicken served in a spiced tomato and melted butter sauce. The Indian name is Murgh makhani, which means butter chicken to signify that it was cooked in butter and tomato sauce. It has a unique flavor as a result of the blend of spices such as garlic, coriander, cumin, and others in the sauce.

To prepare the butter chicken, you marinate the chicken in curry for several hours with a mixture of lemon juice, Kashmiri red chili, salt, garam masala, and ginger garlic paste. Yogurt is the secret ingredient in the marinade that makes the chicken so tender. Traditionally, it is cooked in an oven but it can also be grilled, roasted, or pan-fried. If you like Indian flavors and very tender chicken then you should try butter chicken served with basmati rice and naan bread.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Chicken noodle soup is a total comfort food no matter what age you are. Usually the best chicken soup is made at home and it tastes even better the day after cooking. There are many different ways to prepare chicken noodle soup depending on how creative you want to get. It can be a simple soup made with store-bought chicken broth, fresh veggies and of course chicken. Or you can go traditional and prepare the broth from scratch starting with a whole chicken. Slowly simmering your chicken will fill the kitchen and house with a delicious aroma. Traditional vegetables in the soup are onions, celery, carrots, and garlic which get sauteed in butter or oil over medium heat. Once the vegetables begin to soften, add your broth, salt, pepper and herbs of your choice and shredded/cut chicken pieces. Fresh or dried thyme tastes great too! Add your noodles in the last few minutes of cooking so they are not over cooked. If you don’t eat noodles then adding rice to the soup is another option. Serve your chicken noodle soup with a squeeze of fresh lemon and fresh biscuits or bread.

Chicken Piccata

The last dish on this list is called chicken piccata, which is an Italian dish. It consists of pan-fried chicken that is topped with lemon-butter piccata sauce. It’s a quick and delicious dish for a busy weeknight.

To make the chicken piccata, you will need some few ingredients that are easily available. Gather chicken, salt, pepper, flour, butter, olive oil, stock, shallots, garlic, lemon and capers. Cut the chicken into pieces and dredge it with flour and fry it in oil. The next step is the preparation of the piccata sauce. Use the same oil left after frying the chicken to fry the shallot and add the stock. Leave it on fire for a few minutes then stir in butter, capers and lemon juice. Add your salt and pepper to taste. And that’s it. You just made your piccata sauce. Enjoy as is or with a side of vegetables such as roasted asparagus or potatoes.
